Daily maintenance is the key to keeping your removable dental appliance clean and hygienic. For any appliance that are worn overnight such as dentures, orthodontic appliances, occlusal splints (hard or soft) and snoreguards (anti snoring oral appliance ), it’s important to clean and care for it every day. Two common approaches include brushing with toothpaste and using effervescent cleaning tablets. These methods help remove the buildup of tartar or calculus, which is similar to the buildup that forms on your teeth. However, it’s important to note that overzealous brushing can cause a soft occlusal splint to break down prematurely. Using effervescent cleaning tablets regularly and before a heavy buildup forms is the best approach to maintaining your dental appliance. Starting a regular cleaning routine on a new appliance or before it’s time to replace an old one will ensure the best long-term results. Remember, prevention is key!

The best approach

  1. Ultrasonic Cleaner – Daily use. Gentle mechanical cleaning without the need to brush by hand and risk premature breakage. No need to use chemical daily ( ie cleaning tablet ). Water is usually all you will need
  2. Decalcifying-Antibacterial Tablet – Every other day, once or twice a week or as required to deodorize. Place a tablet in the ultrasonic cleaner.
  3. Toothbrush occasionally when required – I personally found the need to use the first two routinely.
